CANON | Namiko Kitaura Exhibition - Creative Direction

We directed the gallery for Namiko Kitaura's solo exhibition—Recollection—which was the first part of the Canon Gallery S 2015 Special Exhibition series, She's, which features the works of three notable female photographers.

While discussing with Namiko Kitaura what to express and what we wanted the viewers to feel in the exhibition, a particular keyword came to mind. That was, recollection, which became the title of the show. Recollection refers to a thanatological concept in which those who had connections with the deceased gather together to share their memories in a new form of mourning. By re-collecting (re-gathering) unique, individual memories, we shed light on the existence of the self as opposed to the collective and in this, there is the question of what it means to truly exist and how we relate to life and death. This experience is very similar to what one experiences when viewing Namiko Kitaura's photography, and it leaves a resounding impression deep within the viewer's heart. We believe that when a photo, which is a capture of someone else's memory, makes a connection with something deep within the viewer's memory, it allows the viewer to experience life in its most fundamental form.

When you approach each of the individually lit photographs in the gallery, it is as if a vague memory is slowly trickling back into your conscience. It eventually becomes a solid memory, and this process of recollecting is what we expressed in the exhibition. The film lurking in the cotton maze is alive with breath and the large format work is so clear you can feel the texture of the skin. While viewing, you can slowly contemplate what rests in the depths of your psyche.
